Five Questions Every 1099 Worker Should Ask About Health Coverage

Before you choose a plan, these five questions can help you cut through the noise and focus on what actually matters for your situation.

1. What's Your Real Monthly Budget?

Not just the premium — but what you'll actually pay out of pocket including deductibles and copays. A $200/month premium doesn't mean $200 is your true cost.

2. How Important Is Your Current Doctor?

If you must keep a specific provider, find out which plans include them in-network before comparing anything else. This can eliminate half your options immediately.

3. What's Your Travel Profile?

Do you travel for work? Relocate seasonally? Coverage that follows you across state lines matters for independent professionals.

4. Family or Solo?

Adding spouses or dependents changes the math dramatically. Some plans are only available to the self-employed individual; others allow family enrollment.

5. What Coverage Ends Soon?

If you're transitioning from an employer plan, know your termination date. COBRA is a temporary bridge, not a permanent solution.

These questions are a starting point — not a substitute for a personalized conversation about your specific situation.
